How SEM works
A company creates a number of paid search campaigns with the search providers of their choosing. A campaign consists of a keyword or set of keywords, a region, and a bid, what you are willing to pay for each click that you receive as a result from the campaign. This is the important part, you only pay for clicks that are received, not for the number of times your ad is displayed in the search results (commonly called an impression). The higher your bid, the closer to the top your ad will display when the keyword and region criteria are met.
